A large footed bowl decorated with motifs derived from Iznik ceramics. In trefoil cartouches are sprays of blue tulips and red roses. Between them, prunus blossoms in reserve against a cobalt blue ground. The foot is decorated with a vine of saz leaves and rosettes. The intside of the bowl has a narrow border in the same style as the foot ring, and at the centre is a polychrome rosette. The underside of the bowl is painted with Cantagalli's iconic 'singing cockerel' mark.
In 1878 Ulisse Cantagalli inherited a factory in Florence and began to trade as Manifattura Figli di Giuseppe Cantagalli. Realising that there was a global market for high-quality Italian maiolica, he began manufacturing Renaissance revival pieces. Inspiration for his Iznik style pieces probably came from Cantagalli's contemporary Théodore Deck.
