Provenance: Henri Blay (1861–1920).
A charger decorated with copper lustre and cobalt blue highlights. The broad rim is decorated with raised gadroons, alternating between a solid block of lustre, wheat ears, and network pattern, motifs which date the dish to ca. 1500. It has a shallow omphalos featuring the same decoration. At the centre, a flat disc with flower. The reverse is decorated with fern leaves. The rim is also decorated with small balls, overwhich the decoration is applied.
This dish was owned by Henri Blay (1861–1920) a French cavalry officer and avid collector of ceramics. He owned around 65 maiolica dishes, and around a dozen Hispano-moresques, some of which he had probably inherited from his parents. Blay returned from the First World War in very ill health, dying shortly after. His collection was passed down through his family for at least 115 years.
